Exotic Pet Care

Exotic animal care in the Ann Arbor, MI area

At Easthaven Animal Hospital, our doctors have additional training to treat exotic mammals such as rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs, hedgehogs, rats, mice, gerbils and hamsters. We also see reptiles as well and welcome snakes, lizards, turtles and tortoises. Similar to cats and dogs, it is important to have annual wellness exams for your exotic pets for early disease detection, nutritional counseling and housing and overall care. We strive to meet the medical needs for your exotic pets including:

  • Routine wellness exams, every 6-12 months
  • Housing and Overall Care counseling
  • Diagnostic tests such as blood work, radiographs, biopsies and more
  • Surgeries for mass removal, dental disease, spaying and neutering (as appropriate per species)
  • Medications tailored for their needs
  • Nutritional counseling

When to bring your exotic pet to the vet

Exotic pets excel at hiding illness, therefore annual exams are essential to detect problems before they become more severe and to discuss any health or husbandry related questions you may have. Any of these subtle signs of illness in an exotic mammal warrants emergency evaluation:

  • Not eating for 24 hours or a decrease in appetite
  • Diarrhea, loose stool or changes in stool volume
  • Not drinking for 24 hours
  • Not passing stool or urine in 24 hours
  • Restlessness, or change in behavior
  • Difficulty breathing
